Dec 11 - Tuesday

Jason's blood sugars were stabilizing and they were weaning the IV drip. I started to breastfeed Jason overnight and it was going well --still with Jason every 3hrs in the NICU.
My parents came for a brief morning visit before they went home.

I saw my MD around 10am and he said I was doing well and could discharge. I physically felt fine to discharge but was not going to leave the hospital without my son. Paul and I packed up our room, then he went home for a few hours and I went to be with Jason. We talked with the nurse and case manager and they told us we could stay in the room across the hall from the NICU, and "room in." The room would be available on a night by night basis. We were so happy that we could stay and be close to Jason! And so I could be here to feed him every 3 hrs.

Around 3 pm, Jason had stabilized his blood sugars and they stopped the IV drip! The central line came out around 6pm.

And he was able to wear clothes for the first time!

Dec 10 - Monday

First full day in the NICU. He did well over night, continued on the IV drip of D10 and blood sugars were monitored every 6 hrs. They decided he should start to eat but because Jason had a central line, he could only be out of the isolette for short periods of time. They placed an NG tube. The tube was a good thing for a few reasons...Jason had swallowed some blood and had a bunch of air in his stomach, so they emptied his stomach and started tube feedings using breast milk I had pumped. Having the NG tube also allowed the nurses to check how much food Jason was digesting. So Paul and I went from our room on family birthing down to the NICU every three hours all day.

Uncle Luke came to visit Jason in the NICU. Unfortunately, we missed the photo op, but were thankful for his visit. And we are thankful for all the care he provided for Darpy during our stay in the hospital.

Auntie Renee came to visit Jason that night. We were thankful for her company.

Night of Jason's birthday

The nurses had been monitoring Jason's blood sugars because they were a little low, I nursed Jason again. The nurse checked his blood sugar again and said it was still too low (23) and that Jason needed to go to the NICU. So family left and we went down with Jason about 8pm. The nurse said he needed and IV for D10 (sugar water). After 4 unsuccessful IV attempts in his hands, they placed a central line through his umbilical cord (UVC). They started the fluids, told us he was NPO (nothing by mouth) and required to be in an isolette to regulate his temperature. We made sure Jason was settled, then went to our room and I started pumping on schedule, every 3 hrs. Leaving him was hard but we knew he needed to be in the NICU and that he was getting the best care.

Dec 8-9 :pics/ER/birth

Dec 8 - (sat)
We had scheduled maternity pictures for Saturday morning at 9 am. Although I was on bed rest, we did take an hour to go take pictures! We went to a park near our house. There was about 3in of snow overnight, so we were happy to be outside for pictures!
We went home, put on sweats and tried to warm up! Paul fixed us a a nice brunch and then we decided to had a fire downstairs and watch some tv. Around noon, I started to have upper abdominal pain. The pain was constant and wasn't going away so after about 2 hrs we decided to call the 24 hr nurse on call who proceeded to tell us to call 911. I didn't feel that was necessary but it did freak me out so I called my sister, told her what was going on, and she encouraged us to go to the ER to get things checked out. Paul quickly packed himself a bag, took a last bump pic at 38 weeks. grabbed my hospital bag, and we went to the hospital.

We entered the ER around 3pm and I was quickly checked in and brought to triage on family birthing. My blood pressure was quite high and pain was still present so they took some labs (cbc and liver profile). The labs came back showing elevated liver functions and low platelets which was quite concerning. The nurses said we weren't leaving the hospital without a baby. So we were admitted.
We got to be in the labor suite.

Dr. Matuska came to our room, told us I had HELLP syndrome (severe preeclampia) so I needed to be monitored very closely, only thing for resolve of syndrome is to have the baby and we were going to move things along. I was not dilated at all so they had to give me a medication called sidotec to help my cervix soften. HELLP syndrome put me at risk for seizures so they had to give me magnesium through my IV to help prevent them. So, around 6pm I was given sidotec and started on IV fluids and magnesium.

I also had to have fetal monitors on and had to lay on my left side to help with my blood pressures, and had to be bed ridden with exception of trips to the bathroom. The magnesium cause me to have nausea, vomiting and a really red flushed face. I was able to take Zofran which helped the nausea. I got another dose of sidotec around 10pm. The nurses indicated baby's heart rate was decelerating and need for continued close motoring.

Dec 9 - (sun)
Regular dose of sidotec ceased at around midnight due to baby's fluctuating heart rate in response to contractions. Dr.Matsuka broke my water and placed internal fetal monitors at 2:25am. She said I was only dilated to 1cm and indicated "breaking the water was little ambitious" but hopeful it would help me progress. I had to remain in bed, laying mainly on my left side.
-Pitocin started at 6:15am. 70% effaced at 7am and 90%effaced at 10 am but was only dilated to 3 cm. Contractions were intense and Dr. Stocker offered and encouraged getting an epidural. My goal was no epidural...but being confined to bed, unable to use repositioning techniques we learned/practiced made things difficult. Dr. Stocker said epidural would allow my body to relax and make things less stressful for the baby. The issue for getting an epidural was that my platelet count was only 99 and needed to be above 100 to be able to get an epidural. Paul and I talked about it. And we did feel an epidural would be best. They drew a stat platelet count which came back at 104. Dr. Stocker said we'd have a baby by sunset. The Anesthesiologist came to talk with us about the risks of an epidural, encouraged us against an epidural because I was at increased risk for bleeding, but was agreeable to do put it in.
I got the Epidural at 10:45am and was fully dilated at 11:40am. I couldn't believe how much the epidural allowed my body to relax and how quickly I dilated. Dr. Stocker ordered the room to be prepped for delivery. I was still able to feel contractions, much lower intensity though, and MD said I should start pushing.
After only a handful of pushes...Paul announced we had a boy! Time of birth 12:29pm, 5lb 3oz and 18.5 in long and his name...Jason Eugene Menard

Dec 5-7

Dec 5 (wed)
We had an MD appt at 4pm for my 38 week check. My weight, blood pressure, and labs were good but baby was still measuring small. At my 36 week check, baby was measuring small at that time too but head position was already head down and low in the pelvis so he wasn't too concerned. But at 38 weeks, he thought an ultrasound to measure for growth would be the best. So...

Dec 6 (thurs)
I went to work early to get a head start for the day, as I had to leave at 8:30 for the ultrasound. The tech brought me back and started the ultrasound and it was awesome to see the baby. The tech said everything looked ok but yes baby was measuring small...at 34 weeks, 5 days(I was 38 weeks). So I had to meet with the MD to discuss. After waiting for about and hour, my MD arrived, reviewed the ultrasound and told me the following... Bed rest starting tomorrow(12/7), biophysical profile(checking growth/development of baby) on Monday(12/10) and induction scheduled for thurs night(12/13). It was a lot to process but I trusted my MD and knew that is what was best for the baby. So I went back to work around noon, told my boss and coworkers, finished seeing patients, and wrapped things up for my leave.
And came home to beautiful flowers and dinner made!

Dec 7 - (fri)
Bed rest for the day. Paul made sure before he left for work that I would be set for the day. He brought home a pizza for dinner and we watched some tv and went to bed.

Friends and Blessingway

Saturday, December 1
I met my girlfriends (wine night ladies...Courtney, Casey, Robin) in Maple Grove. We had lunch at P.F Changs and then went to Color Me Mine (where you pick out pottery and paint it) to celebrate Robin's bachelorette party. We had a wonderful time!

My meager artistic talent...an ornament for baby's first Christmas. I'll get to pick up the ornament in about a week.

Then Courtney and I went to her house to pick up our husbands and then we met Paul and Lauren Mellick for dinner at Punch Pizza!

After dinner we went to the Mellick's condo and spent the evening visiting!

Sunday, December 2
My sister had a Blessingway for me at our friend Brooke's house. A Blessingway is a gathering to support mom and baby through the rest of her pregnancy, labor and delivery. Each person brought a bead and explained why they picked the bead for me. The beads are all on a bracelet for me to wear/hold during labor: for me to know each person is with me, sending me strength and positive energy.

Each person also brought a candle and explained why they picked it for me. Jess placed all the candles on a beautiful white mirrored tray, to have and to light each candle as I chose but again to light them and remember the support from each person who gave me the candle.

Each person also has a yellow ribbon around their wrist with the intent to look at it, send positive vibes and keep it on until my baby is born.

We had visited, ate pie and did henna tattoos. I'm so thankful for each person present at the Blessingway and those who couldn't make it. Your support has been amazing and I'm so thankful to have you in my life. Paul and I are truly blessed with all of our friends and family and we are so excited for the little one and can't wait for you to meet him or her.

On our way home we stopped to see our friends Kyle, Adrianne, Amelia, and Ada. It was so good to catch up with them!
